Graduate Development Programme

Our Programme

Scottish Woodlands operates a graduate development scheme to give recent graduates of forestry and related subjects experience of life as forest manager and to give successful candidates a good foundation for their future career in forestry.

This is an exciting time to join the forestry industry with many opportunities to gain experience in woodland creation as well as managing existing forests and harvesting the timber crop. As well as a good knowledge of silviculture, a forest manager nowadays embraces many recent technological advances such as digital mapping and remote sensing, mobile devices and apps.

Many innovations across the forest and timber industry reflect the pace of change of technology such as central tyre inflation in timber lorries, virtual reality to aid loading of timber wagons, contemporary capability of harvesters, to laser scanning for grading timber in sawmills. At a policy level, this is also a great time to be involved in the forestry industry as the many benefits for planting more trees is better understood and advocated, e.g. target of Scottish Government to increase planting to 15,000 hectares per year by 2025.

Forestry is a great STEM career choice. If you like working in the outdoors, mostly in rural locations, have relevant qualifications, excellent communication and IT skills and are enthusiastic about all things trees, please join us!
