Meet our Carbon Manager
The potentially "drastic consequences" for future timber supply following changes to the Woodland Carbon Code are highlighted in the latest of Scottish Woodlands' Meet The Team videos.
Carbon Manager Emma Kerr says the changes to the 'additionality test', introduced in late 2022, could lead to a big drop-off in future timber production, because the rules make it much harder to plant wood-producing forests.
In the video, Emma says "no day is the same" in her job as she navigates the world of woodland and peatland carbon, working with investors, farmers and many other interest groups.
When Emma joined Scottish Woodlands Ltd in April 2021, she was the first member of the carbon team - but now leads an all-female team of five, with Peatland Project Manager Erin Stoll recruited recently to put a greater focus on the burgeoning area of peatland restoration.
Emma says in the video: "The Carbon Manager role evolves on a daily basis and I manage a large portfolio of woodland carbon and peatland carbon projects. No day is the same!'
Her favourite tree is a "really burry English oak" and her favourite woodland is Woodcock Air, near Hoddam in Dumfriesshire, which is "covered in a floor of bluebells under the oak trees in May."
